In All His Glory

by John Howard Reid
Review by D. Allen Jenkins

----------

The task of the historical novelist is to find the emptiness in the annuals of history and fill it sufficiently enough to excite the imagination of the reader with the possibilities of what might have been happening in these dark recesses of reality. John Howard Reid has accomplished this task!

Told in the first person, three journal “scrolls” fill the void of 1 Kings 11:40-12:1, and reveal the challenges of Jeroboam as he is given the Pharaoh’s daughter, Kennet, as his wife and is appointed to be his chief counselor after the apparent murder of Jeroboam’s predecessor, Methyethy. The ensuing events revel a cunning plot that finds Jeroboam trapped in The City of the Dead fighting for life, sanity, and answers to why his God, the Living One, has brought him to this place. The conclusion dove tails the story with the biblical account once again and teases the reader with a continuing story to be found in the enigmatic book of Third Kings.

Lovers of Egyptian history will be delighted, as well as those students of biblical Old Testament accounts. Mr. Reid has done well in capturing and telling what might have been the realities of the blackened gaps of human knowledge. It was vacation reading time well spent.
